The first step was taken for High Prairie town council to hire a municipal intern despite two councillors saying they may not be able to afford it.
Council discussed at its June 28 meeting whether or not to consider budgeting $32,000 to pay for the subsidized position in 2017. The municipal intern would work under CAO Brian Martinson and be trained, in addition to helping with his duties.
“It’s a good program. For a relatively low cost it would get a qualified person in there at a subsidized rate,” said Councillor Brian Panasiuk.
“Can we afford the cost?” asked Councillor Donna Deynaka.
Martinson liked the idea, adding council should take into account his impending retirement.
Councillor Michael Long noted council was trying to hold the line on spending and taxes.
“We may not be able to afford it in 2017. I might be wrong … it will be really tight.”
Cox also questioned the expense but noted the motion was to consider adding the money to the 2017 budget, not approving the position.
The motion to forward the matter to the 2017 budget passed with only Long opposed.
