Big Lakes County has taken the first step to deal with flooding issues surrounding the Heart River and East Prairie River.
At its regular meeting, July 27, council approved a staff recommendation to contract Sameng Inc. to assist with a grant application to help resolve the flooding near Horse Lake.
“We’ve been struggling with that for a long time,” says CAO Bill Kostiw.
“Many residents mentioned it at the annual ratepayers’ general meeting in Big Meadow [July 13] and we got lots of phone calls.”
Council approved a further recommendation to appoint Enilda – Big Meadow Councillor Ron Matula and High Prairie East – Banana Belt Councillor Don Charrois and administration to negotiate with Alberta Environment and Parks.
The Horse Lake area was the hardest hit with heavy spring rainfall.
