Road improvements for Big Lakes County take half the 2016 capital budget that tops $24.4 million.
Council adopted the capital budget of $24,409,216 at a special meeting April 26.
“The capital budget can change by what council desires,” says Bill Landiuk, director of corporate services, responsible for finance.
The money comes from $11,920,142 in operating/capital reserves, $6 million from the provincial government, $3,183,206 from 2015 capital reserve, $2,341,599 from the Municipal Sustainability Initiative program and federal gas tax, and $955,269 from 2015 gas tax.
Costs to road upgrades have been set at $12,776,991, with the House Mountain connector road the major project at $8.9 million.
Several bridges and culverts are scheduled to be replaced. Water projects have been budgeted for $6,273,841.
“Most of that is coming out of water reserves,” Landiuk says.
Topping the list are a new water reservoir and truck fill in Kinuso for $1.5 million, a regional waterline between Grouard and Joussard for $1.6 million and a waterline between Triangle and Riverbend for $1.2 million.
New equipment for public works totals $1,517,136, with $503,530 allocated for a new grader and $281,000 for a gravel truck and plow.
Upgrades to fully staff waste transfer stations in Enilda and Gilwood will cost $250,000 each.
