Local food banks will be replenished with funding from the Big Lakes County Invitational Golf Tournament during the summer.

At its regular meeting Sept. 28, Big Lakes County council decided to donate $2,500 each to the High Prairie and District Food Bank and Swan Hills Food Bank.

“We should give to Swan Hills because they are part of our county,” South Sunset House – Gilwood Councillor Ann Stewart says.

About $40,000 was raised at the third annual charity tournament Aug. 20 in High Prairie. Of that, $15,000 each was designated to the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation and to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton.

A cheque was presented to the Heart and Stroke Foundation on Sept. 28.

The other cheques to the food banks and the Stollery Children’s Hospital will be presented at a later date.

The next annual charity tournament is scheduled for Aug. 17, 2017.

‘A terrible decision’: PM Carney set to open Canada’s four largest airports to private investment

Canada’s busiest airports could soon become laboratories for a new model of private investment as Prime Minister Mark Carney moves to hand decades-long operating concessions for those airports to private capital—a plan that is sparking questions about customer service, security for airport workers and impacts on municipalities that depend on the country’s largest aviation hubs. Fundraising loophole tips scales for politicians in Alberta recall campaigns

Alberta’s recall legislation was introduced as a way to hold politicians to account and make ordinary voters the “boss” in provincial democracy. But a fundraising loophole appears to give politicians a major advantage over petitioners, raising questions about the practical viability of the direct democracy initiative. Alberta’s Recall Act allows for the removal of MLAs […] ...More
