Plans to extend the runway at the High Prairie Airport and add a new road are ready to take off with Big Lakes County.
At its regular meeting July 27, council approved a staff recommendation to proceed with engineering and tendering of the airport upgrades that include the runway, lighting and overlay and an access road.
Council suggested at the Alberta Transportation stakeholder meeting that the project be added to the Highway 2 paving project in the region, says a report by Vic Abel, director of public works.
“Since council has identified this project as a priority by setting a capital budget, it makes sense to add this project to the Highway 2 paving tender as a deletable item,” Abel says.
“In order to add this project to this tender, the engineering design and tender preparation will need to be completed by Sept. 1.”
CAO Bill Kostiw says the county is seeking to receive two-thirds funding for the project from airport grants from the provincial or federal government.
Under the recommendation, council is not obligated to award the tender if elected officials consider the bids are too high, Kostiw ways.
County officials will negotiate for engineering costs with WSP engineering firm, which has proposed an amount of $198,358, within the capital budget for 2016.
