High Prairie Airport will soon become property of Big Lakes County.
At its regular meeting Aug 9, Town of High Prairie council passed a recommendation from an in-camera discussion, to annex land north of the new High Prairie Health Complex east of 40 Street in exchange for the county getting clear title to High Prairie Airport.
“Given all the different options discussed by council, we feel it is in the best interest of the town to transfer ownership,” Mayor Linda Cox says.
New title of the land will be official when the transaction is finalized through the legal annexation process, in a transfer for a nominal fee.
The town will turn over the airport land to the county, excluding the areas of the raw water reservoir and the fire training centre, town CAO Brian Martinson says.
“Big Lakes County wishes to assume only the High Prairie Airport lands necessary for the current and future operations,” says a letter from county CAO Bill Kostiw, dated June 20.
Located south of the town on Highway 749, the airport has been operated in partnership with the town and county with cost-sharing 50-50.
Under the new ownership, the county will be responsible for 100 per cent of the operating costs, Martinson says.
