A Driftpile man who took a weapon from a peace officer during a vehicle stop has been placed on probation for one year.
Skyler Trinity Chalifoux was sentenced to probation for 12 months after pleading guilty to disarming or attempting to disarm a peace officer Sept. 23 in the High Prairie Court of Justice.
The charge arose after Chalifoux was stopped by High Prairie RCMP while driving his quad on April 15 at 11:30 p.m., Crown prosecutor student-at-law Alex Granley told court.
Chalifoux tried to leave on foot before the officer caught up to him. The officer tried to use his conducted energy weapon and attempted to put handcuffs on Chalifoux.
“While grappling with the officer, Mr. Chalifoux grabbed it,” the Crown said.
Chalifoux refused to get on the ground and fled police.
Chalifoux voluntarily turned himself into police the next day, said his lawyer Derek Renzini.
“He offered a letter of apology to police,” Renzini added.
“It’s very unfortunate what happened.”
Chalifoux has no previous criminal record, court heard.
Justice S.P. Hinkley told Chalifoux he is very fortunate the incident didn’t get worse.
“You’re lucky,” Justice Hinkley said.
“We all make mistakes – I hope you learn from them,” he added.
During probation, Chalifoux was ordered to complete assessment, treatment and counselling for anger management as directed.
Renzini told court Chalifoux has already taken steps for anger management.
Bryden Allen Willier, 36, was sentenced to 50 days in jail after pleading guilty to for failing to comply with a probation order.
He was credited for 33 days already served in the Peace River Correctional Centre.
Willier breached a probation to have no contact with his grandmother or be in her residence, Crown prosecutor Kelly Payne told court.
However, Willier was at his grandmother’s home in Grouard sleeping on a bed in a bedroom on Aug. 22. The grandmother told authorities he arrived at her home four or five days earlier, the Crown added.
Payne noted that Willier has breached several court and probation orders on his record.
Willier says he is eager to leave his criminal ways.
“I’m trying to get on the path to a better life,” Willier told court.
Duty counsel Derek Renzini added Willier understands the consequences of his actions in the breach at his grandmother’s home.
“He’s old enough to know better,” Renzini said.
Jericho Boyd Grey, 28, of Atkimeg, was sentenced to 45 days in jail after pleading guilty to possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.
He was given 30 days credit for time served in the Edmonton Remand Centre.
Justice S.P,. Hinkley supported the joint submission for sentencing from Crown prosecutor student-at-law Alex Granley and Grey’s lawyer, John Sinclair.
The charge arose after Grey was in possession of a machete in a residence with adults and a young child inside. High Prairie RCMP found a machete on a bed in a bedroom and were involved in a stand-off with Grey for 90 minutes.
Grey battles with several lifelong addictions, Sinclair told court.
