Judge D.R. Shynkar
A young Driftpile man continues on the road to a better life after sentencing in High Prairie provincial court July 25.
Burton Clayton Isa- dore, 25, was sentenced to probation for six months after pleading guilty to possession of a prohibited weapon.
Court heard Isadore was intoxicated when he was apprehended by Lakeshore Regional Police Services at his mother’s residence on July 23, 2015. At the time, he pulled out at knife that he was prohibited from possessing, said Crown prosecutor Haydn Shook.
“While he was being removed, he pulled out a knife not to use on the officers, but to hand it to his mother,” Shook said.
“The problem is that you had a knife and it was spring-loaded,” Judge D.R. Shynkar said.
“It has a button to release the blade; that makes it restricted.
“He was not threatening anyone.”
Isadore told court he uses the knife for protection, said duty counsel Vilma Mydliar.
He added he would benefit from probation rather than custody or a fine.
“I think better when I’m on probation, it will keep me on line,” Isadore said as he addressed the judge.
Isadore will also take counseling and treatment for life issues as part of his probation.
“I’m satisfied he is taking efforts to modify his lifestyle,” Judge Shynkar said.

Donny A. Yellow- knee, 46, of Whitefish, was fined $300, plus a $90 victim fine surcharge, for disqualified driving of a motor vehicle.
“He didn’t get his licence back,” Judge D.R. Shynkar said.
Yellowknee was charged for not having a licence, although it was past the date it was suspended, Crown prosecutor Hadyn Shook told court.
“If you got caught during the prohibition period, you would have got 30 days in jail,” Judge Shynkar said.

Charles Pierre Giroux, 55, was fined $100 plus a $30 victim fine surcharge, each for failing to comply with an undertaking and for failing to report to police to get his fingerprints registered.
Giroux breached an undertaking when he was outside Driftpile.
Giroux was seen in Wabasca and reported to police.
“There may be good reason why he was in Wabasca,” said Judge Shynkar. “Not a lot of stores are in Driftpile, so he may have been shopping.”
Duty counsel explained why he was in Wabasca.
“He said he was giving someone a ride to Fort McMurray and then went shopping,” Mydliar said.
