Wins are rare for any Slave Lake team over Prairie River but that’s what happened Dec. 7 as the Slave Lake St. Francis Falcons defeated the Raiders 53-32.
The win left both teams at 2-1 in a three-way tie for second place in the standings with Gift Lake. The first place St. Andrew’s Saints are 2-0 so it looks like the Smoky River Junior High School Basketball League Boy’s Division promises to be very competitive this season.
Turin Stecyk’s game-high 18 points led the Falcons while Zean Sanje added 12. Both are averaging over 14 points per game.
Dominic Bonde added eight points and Kyle Melegrito six for the Falcons, who led 14-10 after one quarter and 22-16 at the half. The third quarter proved to be the Raiders downfall as they were outscored 24-6.
Completing the scoring for the Falcons were Tristan Mabo with four points, Ethan Livingstone and Terrance Alook each with two points, and Marc Franco Bautista’s free throw.
Trent Mindel led the Raiders with nine points. Adam Cardinal and Kieran Larson each added eight points, Dave Espina four and Logan Krupa three points to round out the Raiders’ scoring.
The normally high scoring Raiders played much of their second string in the second half to give them court time, owing to the lopsided score.
The Raiders next play Jan. 4 when they travel to Gift Lake. The Falcons visit High Prairie St. Andrew’s, also on Jan. 4.
