A young man charged with the death of a 14-year-old boy in Driftpile on New Year’s Eve 2013 will be sentenced almost three years after the incident.
Blake Francis Giroux, 23, will be sentenced Dec. 7 in Peace River Court of Queen’s Bench, a communications spokesperson for Alberta Justice confirms.
He appeared in court April 25 to set a date for sentencing for manslaughter using a firearm, aggravated assault and intentionally discharging a firearm. The matter was originally set for March 4.
Sentencing was adjourned because the lawyer for Giroux was granted a request to remove himself as the counsel of record.
Giroux was originally charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Dallas Belcourt before he pleaded guilty to lesser charges in court Nov. 16, 2015.
