There is a growing concern over the number of users not wearing helmets at the Q Skate Plaza.
The matter is being discussed at High Prairie town council and High Prairie Interagency, safety clinics and information sessions have been held, and still more sessions held at the schools urging users to wear helmets.
Now, the High Prairie and District Children’s Resource Council is getting involved.
Jayne Roberts, project co-ordinator of the Brighter Future Expansion Project, is trying to gather used helmets to distribute to users.
“There is a lack of proper safety equipment in town,” says Roberts, who visited a few stores and discovered part of the problem.
She adds there seems to be a good supply for young children and adults, not youth. The reason: they are simply not selling.
And, she adds, there appears to be a good supply of skateboarding equipment but “not a good collection of bike helmets.”
To help the situation, Roberts is offering to collect used helmets and distribute them to users at her office.
Positive reinforcement about wearing helmets is also being promoted.
“We need to look at why [children and youth] are not wearing helmets,” she says.
She also plans to build on a program where users are given prizes by offering some of her own.
