Letter – Impressions we give our children

by | Mar 1, 2018 | Opinion

People can sometimes have very large blind spots. I have had a couple of conversations lately that left me wondering. One fellow wanted to know why all those women waited until now to come forward with the sexual abuse allegations.

It is a good question. The answer is a lot of them didn’t. They have been going after the creeps for years. There were several very good reasons why we didn’t hear about it.

First, the corporation’s men like Roger Ayles and Bill O’Reilly worked for [Fox News] paid out millions in settlements to the women, with the invocation of a non-disclosure agreement. That meant if you talk about it you had to give the money back, and could face criminal charges.

The other came out with the exposure of Donald Trump’s latest escapade. The affair he had with a Playmate. With that came the news that his good friend at the Enquirer had helped him by buying stories of his indiscretions and then not printing them.

Harvey Weinstein is reputed to have had his buddies do the same thing.

Most of these women were not coming forward now to cash in. They had been trying to go public for years. The porn star had signed a non-disclosure agreement too; but, she feels that since Trump’s lawyer claimed to have paid her out of his own pocket she now feels free to speak up since Trump’s side blabbed first.

The stone wall, I get that. I know exactly how those women felt. In my case it wasn’t billionaires making hamfisted passes at me. It was medical malpractice. Yes, it was a long time ago that doctor gave me all those iron shots I didn’t need and didn’t bother to order tests on my partner. Why don’t I forget about it?

Well, I haven’t been back to the grave lately, but I am pretty sure Rod is still dead. The iron shots may not have killed me but when you look up iron saturated blood all of the health problems I now have are listed there.

My ferritin was over 649 at one point, normal for a woman is between 17 and 170. My blood quit clotting, I bled out during surgery. If I had been injured in a car accident or something I would have died.

My doctor knew it was too high. He ordered a test and when it came back that my ferritin was over 300 he told me to keep coming back because with my condition the anemia could come back quickly. At that time I did not have access to the Internet, and I was more trusting.

I did try and do something about it at the time but the CPSA stonewalled. I went to a lawyer but the law at time stated it had be long lasting and severe damage before a doctor could be liable. No way of proving it then.

Now I am smart enough to know that some things are grandfathered in, but that did not make it right to do it. The laws and attitudes have to change or the quacks will keep on doing these things.

At this point it is not about what happened to me as what is happening to others and stopping it. If we don’t keep after them, they will just keep doing it.

Then there is the thing with Trump. People who hate pot love Trump. Is the legacy of a fit and healthy double standard one we want to leave to our children? If pot is immoral what about adultery? Do you want young people who think it is alright for husbands to cheat and beat their wives, for anyone to drive drunk, or to violate the rights of anyone else just because you can come up with some excuse?

We are not billionaires. No one is willing to pay out hundreds of thousands in hush money for us. Even if there was it would not make the scummy thing we did any less scummy?

Eva Sartorius,
High Prairie
