The owner of the Key Inn Motel will not be getting any forgiveness for paying his taxes late.
Do Sup Shin wrote town council July 8 requesting that his tax $2,845.76 penalty for the Key Inn be waived.
Shin wrote he mailed payment on June 22 and had expected the cheque to be cleared by the end of June.
“However, the payment was cleared on July 4 … this coincided with other debits which were took place in the beginning of July, such as payroll and other taxes.”
The account balance was $30.09 and his cheque bounced.
An apologetic Shin requested the penalty be waived and offered to pay any bank fees arising.
Taxes have since been paid.
Shin’s request came on the July 26 town council agenda after another request was turned down due to a bank error.
“If we were to have ruled in favour of this one and the last one it would have cost the taxpayers $6,385.07,” said Councillor Michael Long.
Mayor Cox questioned the consistency of council’s actions, given they granted a Drayton Valley woman forgiveness July 12.
She added town council was not losing any money because it was a penalty.
“It is not costing the taxpayers any money.”
Only Cox opposed the motion to refuse forgiveness of the penalty.
