As a parent, did you find kindergarten registration overwhelming?
On May 7, East Prairie Hillview School hosted its annual Kinder Fair to alleviate those feelings for parents.
Throughout the day, staff walked parents through the registration process, school priorities such as literacy and student attendance, and the kindergarten curriculum as referenced in My Child’s Learning: A Parent Resource.
Parents became more familiar with nearby community agencies during the fair. Representatives from Alberta Health Services provided parents information about nutrition for a 1-5-year-olds, dental sealants and immunization schedules for children.
Katherine Barkwell, registered dietitian, and Laura Jenkins, registered nurse, both explained they visit the East Prairie Métis Settlement on the second Tuesday of every month. Barkwell also informed parents that it’s free to visit a registered dietitian.
Jennifer Laycock, behaviour management consultant for Northern Lakes Collaborative Services, educated parents about how they can support their children when it comes to speech and language development and fine motor skills.
The Kinder Fair wasn’t the only activity in the gym that day. Staff also organized a bake sale and a Mother’s Day Tea.
