Big Lakes County residents who pay their taxes the following January could pay a heftier fine.
At its regular meeting, July 27, county council gave first reading to a bylaw to increase the fine to 14.5 per cent when late payment is made in January.
“That’s doubling it, that’s a bit much,” says South Sunset House – Gilwood Councillor Ann Stewart.
“I think it’s a little high, 10 per cent would be more reasonable.”
For late payment made in July, the fine would remain at 7.5 per cent.
“Most municipalities have that, to double it for January,” CAO Bill Kostiw says.
After the bylaw is advertised for public comment and reaction, council will return the bylaw for further readings.
Joussard Councillor Ed Podollan made a motion to table the bylaw, but received no support from other councillors.
