On Saturday, Aug. 12, I went walking with my grandchildren and their dogs on the Jaycee Park trail. We went on a beautiful path that took us behind the rodeo grounds where we enjoyed the trees and green fields, then took us alongside the river bank. I enjoyed the lively wild flowers and planted flower beds.
However, I am in a wheelchair and the path has not been looked after so it was very rough, even broken in places, which made it very difficult to manoeuvre a chair through. People with strollers and parents with small children would also be able to enjoy the walk if it was fixed.
I understand the trail was a memorial for the doctor’s wife [Riana Otto] who was slain because she loved to go for morning runs. This run would also be a much safer place for people to exercise without so much traffic.
Could the town not use their summer maintenance crews to maintain this lively trail in this woman’s memory? Then everyone could enjoy this treasure to its full potential.

Editor’s note: The writer did not state the Otto murder occurred on the walking trails. To clarify, the Otto murder occurred just northeast of the current hospital.
