Peace River School Division is making washrooms in schools safer in response to concerns from students.
Every year, the Division invites students from upper elementary grades to senior high to meet with the superintendent and board to talk about what is important to them in education, states a posting on the PRSD website Nov. 20.
Over the next several weeks, PRSD will share some of issues highlighted and some ways PRSD is responding to the topics of discussion.
Students expressed concern about vandalism, student hangouts and other inappropriate behaviour inside washrooms at their schools.
They spoke about the need for more privacy in washroom stalls to improve student comfort and safety while using the washroom.
It is something PRSD has already done, and will continue to do.
Over the last two summers, PRSD renovated washrooms at Peace River High School to improve student comfort and safety.
Similar renovations at more PRSD schools will continue to be a priority.
Additionally, security cameras have been installed at most school in the hallways outside washrooms to monitor the number of students who enter the washroom and the length of time they are inside.
PRSD encourages students to express their concerns to their school administrators as issues arise.
