The Peace River Pioneers advanced to the championship final of the first official season of the Alberta High School 9-a-Side Football League.

The No. 2 provincially ranked Pioneers advanced to the league/provincial final against the No. 3 Ponoka Broncs on Nov. 22 at Grande Prairie.

Peace River defeated the Valleyview Hillside Cougars 28-15 in the semifinal Nov. 16 on home soil in Peace River.

“Valleyview brought their “A” game for sure,” head coach Mark Owens says.

“They made us play hard for that win.

“It was a tight back-and-forth game.”

The Pioneers were hoping to avenge a loss in the final last season when the Camrose Trojans defeated Peace River 31-14 in Camrose in the second season for the league.

Peace River Pioneer player Rowan Shannon (No. 2) carries the ball as he is swarmed by Valleyview Cougars’ defenders at home Nov. 16.
