Sooner or later if you keep pounding on a door it is going to open.
The Edson Eagles discovered that fact Oct. 25 as they lost their first game of the season 5-4 to the hometown High Prairie Red Wings.
Other than one blowout loss earlier this season, the Red Wings were inching closer and closer to knocking off the Eagles, and that night came last week.
Ty Cunningham’s third period goal proved to be the game-winner as the Red Wings improved to 6-2-1-0 for 13 points, just five points behind Eagles, who sit at 9-1-0-0 for 18 points. The Red Wings have played one less game. Standings are after the Eagles’ hometown 5-2 win over the Red Wings the next night.
Tate Paul and Ty Cunningham thrilled the home crowd as the Red Wings led 2-0 before the game was 11 minutes old.
Mason Buzzell replied for the Eagles before the end of the period.
The Red Wings took control in the second period. Nolan Noskey and Barrett Butcher scored in the first 14 minutes and it was 4-1. Using a similar scrip to the first period, Landy Johson scored for the Eagles to make it 4-2.
In the third period, Cunningham’s goal made it 5-2 and it looked like the Red Wings were home and cooled.
However, the Eagles rallied late. Austin Berezowksi scored with 9:22 remaining. Shortly afterwards, with 7:07 left, Andras Kehl scored an unassisted goal and it was game-on!
But the Red Wings shut the door the rest of the way to secure a much-needed win.
The Eagles outshot the Red Wings 46-42, including 24-14 in their third period when they rallied. Shots were recorded as 3-2 in the first period for the Eagles. The Red Wings then outshot the Eagles 26-19 in the second period. Hard to imagine such a swing!
The Eagles did not need long to exact revenge on their hated foes. They returned home the next night to win 5-2 and split the home-and-home series.
This time the Eagles flipped the script and got off to a fast start. Kehl and Ryan Schneider gave the Eagles a 2-1 first period lead in the first minute.
Ty Cunningham stopped the bleeding just past the halfway point to make it 2-1.
The Eagles outscored the Red Wings 2-1 in the second period to take a 4-2 lead. Kehl’s scored his second and third goals of the night to make it 4-2 with Owen Paul’s goal sandwiched in-between for the Red Wings.
Kehl’s fourth of the night in the third period salted away the win.
Play was again close as the Eagles outshot the Red Wings 37-36, including 27-23 in the first two periods.
