The High Prairie Renegades fell 36-8 to the Grande Prairie Mavericks at home to open the high school football season Aug. 31.
Jacob Laderoute ran for a 45-yard touchdown on a pass from quarterback Logan Long with 2:27 left in the game.
Renegade fans and players cheered as he sprinted down the sideline in front of the High Prairie bench.
Tyson Jones ran in to score a two-point convert.
“That was more touchdowns than we scored all last season,” says head coach Trevor Jaycox, who was an assistant coach last year.
The Renegades never gave up, even as they trailed 30-0 after three quarters.
“They came together in the second half,” Jaycox says.
“We scored more points in the game than we did all last season.”
He says the defence played tougher than it has in the previous two seasons in the Mighty Peace Football Conference.
Now the team is eager to build on that respectable start.
“We’re going to go back to the basics and get ready for our next game,” Jaycox says.
The Renegades host the Whitecourt Cats on Sept. 8 at 4:30 p.m. at E.W. Pratt field.
Before the game, the team and school will hold a ceremony to retire the jersey No. 49 of former player Johnny Linteris, who passed away in a motor vehicle crash on July 29. He played the past two seasons for the Renegades.
Players on the Renegades team are wearing No. 49 on their helmets all season in his memory.
