One local shopper was the big winner in a new promotion to kick off Christmas shopping in High Prairie.
Necole Screpnek, of High Prairie, won several $50 gift cards to local businesses as the High Prairie and Area Chamber of Commerce presented Light Up Local Shopping during High Prairie Light-Up on Nov. 25.
She won gift cards to A Few of Your Favourite Things, Amiro’s Steak House, Attic Effects, and Rural Fashion Girl, and other prizes acquired by the executive.
“About 10 businesses participated in the promotion,” says president Tracy Sherkawi.
“From the feedback I got, it was easier than the Passport to Christmas and less complicated.”
During the new promotion, shoppers were eligible to win a prize whether or not they purchased anything.
“I’m sure we’ll review if for next Christmas,” Sherkawi says.
Business was booming for some businesses and not so others.
“I did twice as much business and I had done on my previous best Light-Up,” says Sherkawi, who owns Attic Affects.
Milder weather also drew increased shopping traffic to town, she says.
“Weather is always a factor and we had decent weather,” Sherkawi says.
However, the growing popularity of Black Friday frenzy also draws local people on that day to larger shopping and business centres, she adds.
