South Peace News has won the General Excellence category in its circulation class at the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association June 1.

High Prairie’s community newspaper also placed second in the Best Editorial Page, Best Front Page, and Best Sports Pages.

Points are awarded in various aspects of each competition by independent judges from other provinces.

Each newspaper in the competition was asked to submit one entry from May 2017 and one from October 2017 for judging.

The four awards swells South Peace News’ total to 85 provincial and national awards in its history including 41 AWNA awards and 44 Canadian Community Newspapers Association awards.

South Peace News has placed first 17 times in various AWNA categories, second 14 times and third 10 times. The achievements include 12 awards for Best Editorial Page, 11 for Best Sports Section, nine for Best All-Round, and four for Best Front Page.

In the last 19 years, South Peace News has won AWNA awards 15 times.

Since 1990, South Peace News has won at least one CCNA or AWNA award 28 times. The only year no award was earned was in 1998.

“We are pleased to be recognized for our consistency by the judges – our peers,” says published Mary Burger.

“We will continue to strive to bring our readers an award-winning newspaper, and thank our readers and advertisers for their support.”
