Taekwondo students kick it up a notch

High Prairie Tiger Taekwondo Club received their new belts Feb. 5 after testing on Feb. 4. Several students of the High Prairie Tiger Taekwondo Club were promoted to higher belts after testing on Feb. 4.

Grand Master James Sun Huan Chung of Edmonton assessed the testing of eight local students. They were joined by 15 members from their sister club in Berwyn.

“He was very pleased with the calibre of the students overall, although he did want them to kiyap [yell] louder,” says instructor Beth Cramer.

“The students have been working hard to get to their next level belt, and they have shown great improvement, not just in their techniques but in self-confidence,” she adds.

“Most were very nervous about meeting Grand Master Chung, however, he was quick to put them at ease.”

He singled out one student, Bella Sutherland, for her excellent kicking technique and encouraged others to do as well.

“Instructors were very pleased with the feedback from Grand Master Chung and happy that their students are doing well,” Cramer says.

Several students have excelled in taekwondo throughout the year. Juliet Sutherland was one of three students who received Grand Master Chung’s approval to receive a Black Belt last June. Keira Allan and Dahlia Allen went to the Tiger Tournament in Edmonton last fall and both came back with two medals each.

Cramer says the club looks forward to the next coloured-belt testing with Grand Master Chung in April or May.

The club currently welcomes new members to join the 22 students, ranging in age from 5-60 years of age.

Training sessions are held Monday and Wednesday at the Enilda Hall at 6 p.m.
