Today, Wednesday, Jan. 31, is the open house for Northern Lakes College to talk about their new High Prairie campus. Drawings of the building will be shown and questions answered.
It’s sort of an all day thing, from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. It’s at the present High Prairie campus location at 4208-53rd Avenue, across the street from the UFA Bulk or A&W.

We’re doing our part promoting tourism!
Log into our website at southpeacenews.com for a raft of photos on the ice fishing village at Joussard. Eighty huts strong and growing. Word is fishing has been good the past several weeks.
Keep in mind, one does not need a hut to fish from. You will need some way to drill a hole. Ice is getting upwards of a metre thick so it’s in good shape for vehicles.
Even so, any place you are fishing on ice, anywhere, follow the beaten paths. It’s not a good idea to drive anywhere there is no traffic. Often, there is a reason why nobody has “gone that way”.

We were kind of hoping Edmonton would be on the short list for the new Amazon second headquarters that company says they want to build someplace.
Among the minimum requirements are one million people in the metropolitan area, so there are about eight or so Canadian cities that measure up. Anyway, Amazon announced the shortlist a few weeks ago. Only Toronto is on the list.
So, one good thing is, Calgary won’t be changing its name to Calmazon or Amagary, as they sort of tongue-in-cheek offered to do.
Does that sound like a dumb idea? Well, they name billion dollar sports stadiums after companies. Maybe they could have started a trend.

Super Bowl 52 comes our way this coming Sunday, Feb. 4.
Get a pot of chili on. Fill the fridge with cold beverages. Invite your friends.

After Super Sunday, comes Valentine’s Day!
Pick up the chocolates. Buy a gift certificate at one of our great local stores. And please send in a form for southpeacenews.com online, to wish your sweetie a Happy Valentine’s. All will be posted online at our Website, and hopefully, will make our print edition, too.

Also, check online at southpeacenews.com, under the Quirk News column, for the cat story. Here we have a full-grown cougar scooting along through the main drag of Banff.
We recall the story last year about a cougar that attacked a pet dog in the parking lot outside the highway Tim Hortons in Whitecourt.
The highway Tims [there are two in Whitecourt] is set back from Highway 43, like all the businesses are on Gasoline Alley. There is a small bluff of trees along the long parking lot, and in fact a large wooded section dividing the industrial corner where Tims is, and a residential area of the old town. The cougar leapt out of the small bit of bush and went after the poor doggie, but the pet survived when the owner jumped into action.
Meanwhile, we don’t have any photos of the coyotes that people say are hanging around the High Prairie Hospital these days. Send them in if you have any.

There is more news about the Hawaii missile scare from a few weeks ago. The governor of Hawaii, which is like our provincial premier, has the authority to call off the alert that was transmitted on TV, radio, Internet, cell phones and warning signs.
But he didn’t do so for something like 28 minutes!
The reason? He had a press conference, and in that he says he couldn’t remember his Twitter password!
As one of the talking heads on Fox News said, “What is this? He couldn’t pick up a telephone and call a radio station? Hawaii is run by teenagers!”
Our apologies to teens.
