Town and county councils have pitched in a small amount of funding to the new High Prairie Horseshoe Club to host a tournament in early September.
Funding of $200 was approved upon administration recommendation by Town of High Prairie council at its regular meeting Aug 8 and by Big Lakes County council Aug. 9.
“It’s a small price to pay for an event that will bring people into town and to support a new recreation club,” High Prairie Councillor Michael Long says.
High Prairie and District Regional Recreation Board is joining the club to co-host the event Sept. 2-3 at the Gordon Buchanan Recreation Centre under the Alberta Horseshoe Pitchers Association.
“We are looking forward to local members as well as competitors from throughout Alberta to attend our tournament,” club president Ray Prevost says in a letter to council.
“We are the only AHPA tournament north of Edmonton, and we would like to make our f irst annual event a great success.”
The local horseshoe club started in July with about 20 people, the application letter states.
“The club’s goal is to have a successful tournament so that our club may have permanent professional pits installed for the whole community to play,” Prevost says.
Temporary pits are located at High Prairie RV Park at the east end of town.
Drop-in horseshoes is each Tuesday from 7-9 p.m.
