Second World War veteran and longtime High Prairie resident George Bennett has shared experiences about his life and service in an interview recorded on video.

Recorded Nov. 13, 2025, the hour-long video was presented at a viewing Feb. 1 at the High Prairie branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Bennett served as a wireless air gunner (radio operator) for the Royal Air Force from 1941-47 for England where he was born July 30, 1922.

He was interviewed by Zach Dunn, a young Canadian filmmaker and founder of Global Veteran Stories, a worldwide project. Bennett was in High Prairie when he was interviewed on Zoom by Dunn, who was in Ottawa.

Bennett was asked to share memories of his time in the war and describes many experiences of serving his country.

Legion president Don Ebbett says Bennett was very engaged in the interview and the project is valuable to let others hear about war experiences from veterans.

“George enjoyed it,” Ebbett says.

“It brought back memories for him – vivid memories.

“You could see when he paused, he was thinking back.”

Ebbett adds it’s important to document war veterans and share their memories.

“About 1,000 veterans in Canada are still living and when they die, with them goes the history,” Ebbett says.

“Living history will be gone.”

Documentaries will be accessible to schools and other groups.

A manuscript of his memories is expected to be released in the coming weeks.

Clips of the video are available online and Dunn will produce the documentary in the next few months.

Since the project started four years ago, he has interviewed more than 140 veterans from the Second World War, Korean War and Vietnam War from all over the world and shares their stories across Canada.

Dunn has interviewed veterans from 16 different countries including Canada, USA, England, Netherlands, Poland, Sri Lanka, South Korea and Ireland.

A life member of the High Prairie Legion, Bennett came to High Prairie in 1954 to visit his sister and continues to call it home. He adapted to life in High Prairie and became active in many business ventures and community organizations.
