A minor caught drinking and driving found out about the law in a costly way.
An 18-year-old male from Gift Lake, who cannot be named under the Criminal Youth Justice Act, was sentenced as a minor when he appeared in High Prairie provincial court Aug. 8.
He was fined $500 for obstructing a peace officer and resisting arrest and $400 for driving with alcohol limit over .08 milligrams and for driving a motor vehicle with no insurance.
“That’s not a great start to your driving career,” Judge D.R. Shynkar says.
The teen was also handed the automatic driving suspension for impaired driving of one year.
“He says he’s learned his lesson,” duty counsel Harry Jong says.
Crown prosecutor Haydn Shook says the teen was driving erratically near Driftpile before he was stopped by a police officer on May 7.
“He saw the vehicle swerving,” Shook says.
Police quickly detected alcohol when the driver was stopped.
“There was an odor of liquor and he appeared tired and confused,” Shook says.
Both breath samples were recorded at 100 mg. The teen wrestled with police as he was in the back seat of the police vehicle.
“There was a physical tussle and he resisted arrest,” Shook says.
Driving around in a car his father bought for him for $500, the teen was drinking with some of his friends, Jong says.
After the car was impounded, it was eventually sold when the owner failed to pay for charges.
